Aylesbury Town Council is delighted to be organising the town’s Christmas lights for the first time.
The Christmas lights will be officially switched on at the Town Council’s new Christmas event, Christmas on the Cobbles, on Sunday 20 November.
The lights will have a new look from previous years, using sustainable materials including LED and bio print designs. The Town Council has chosen lights which are environmentally friendly and have low running costs.
The lights will be switched on daily from 20 November through to 5 January from 4pm until midnight. To light the Christmas tree during this time costs £8.43 which works out at 17p per day. The cost to light all of the Christmas displays during this period is £1,728.43.
Sustainable features include:
- Designs are made from bio-sourced GMO-free sugar cane which is turned into dehydrated bioethanol and eventually used to colour the lights.
- Brand new eco-responsible materials allow the removal of more than 80% of aluminium from the 2D motifs, which has a substantial impact on the carbon footprint.
- The Bioprint or Recyprint manufacturing process emits 10 times less CO2 than aluminium.
- The 100% LED lighting components are recycled after use.
The Town Council would like to thank Buckinghamshire Council for their support and grant funding contribution towards this project.
Leader of the Council, Cllr Richard Lloyd, said: “The Christmas lights display aims to bring joy and comfort to residents in what is a very challenging time for many. We have selected a supplier that not only provides the low-cost and eco-friendly lights but have designed a stunning display that the town will be proud of.
“While the Town Council does not have direct responsibility for the town market, its surrounding land areas, shop units and businesses rates, we do feel strongly that we, the town’s local council, should do what we can to support our local businesses and to help the town look its best to attract new businesses and visitors to our town.
“We would like to have more involvement in decision making on civic buildings and land areas, like the market, green spaces and community centres, as we believe we can make a positive impact in these areas. These are still the responsibility of Buckinghamshire Council with whom we still raise concerns and endeavour to resolve issues.
“As the local town and parish council, we feel strongly committed to the town and its surrounding community.”
The Town Council is responsible for the town’s floral displays, free community events and Christmas lighting, plus other community led projects, such as plans for a new community sports hub, to attract visitors and add vibrancy to Aylesbury.
Buckinghamshire Council, the county’s unitary council, is responsible for highway matters, payment of council tax, car parks, roads, pavements and adult social care among other responsibilities.
