The official inauguration of Aylesbury’s new Town Mayor and Deputy Town Mayor took place on Friday 19 May at Aylesbury College.
The ceremony takes place each year to inaugurate the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Aylesbury. Cllr Steven Lambert is the new Mayor of Aylesbury for 2023-24 and Cllr Alan Sherwell is Deputy Mayor. More than 180 invited guests including Town Councillors were in attendance.
Former Mayor, Cllr Tim Dixon, presented the Freda Roberts Community Award to Annette “Silver Owl” Jones, who has been dedicated to Girlguiding in Buckinghamshire since 1988. The award is given each year to commend those who dedicated their lives to their community just as the late Mrs Freda Roberts MBE, a stalwart within the Aylesbury community did, who passed away in 2021.
To conclude his 2022-23 mayoral year, Cllr Tim Dixon, presented a cheque of £10,560.15 to representatives from one of his chosen charities of the year – Emmett’s Genies.
During Cllr Dixon’s mayoralty, he encouraged residents, schools, organisations and businesses to donate food items to Aylesbury Foodbank as part of his 10 Tonne Challenge. It was announced 57 tonnes of items were donated through his challenge and a cheque of £14,539 was presented to representatives from Aylesbury Foodbank.
Following these awards, the new Mayor of Aylesbury, Cllr Steven Lambert and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Alan Sherwell, processed out of the college atrium alongside previous Town Mayor to pass over the mayoral robes.
In his acceptance speech, the new Town Mayor, Cllr Steven Lambert, announced Youth Concern and Age UK Buckinghamshire Aylesbury branch would be his chosen charities of the year. Continuing the legacy, the new Mayor will be continuing to support Aylesbury Foodbank through the Mayor’s 10 Ten Challenge.
The Bard of Aylesbury, Gareth Johnson, concluded the ceremony with a poem reflecting on the former Mayor, Cllr Tim Dixon’s, year of mayoralty.
The evening was compered by DJ Dan Blaze and guested enjoyed a two-course meal prepared and served by Aylesbury College students.
