Aylesbury Town Council’s Father’s Day favourite, Soapbox Derby, wowed crowds on Sunday 16 June.

After months of fine-tuning their gravity powered karts, teams of friends, family and colleagues had a chance to race down the 95m tarmac course in Aylesbury’s Whitehill Park to see who could make it down the fastest.

The event, which was free to attend, drew in lots of families who cheered all participants as teams competed in three heats.

Racing teams showed great creativity in their designs which included a woolly sheep by Animal Antiks, a Lightning McQueen from Disney’s Cars inspired kart by Impact Signs and a stealthy shark by Team Shark Attack.

The haybale podium saw winners collect their certificates, medals and trophies which were awarded by the Mayor of Aylesbury, Cllr Alan Sherwell and Deputy Mayor, Cllr Nidhi Mehta.

  • The top three karts in the Senior category were: 1st Florence and the Mechanics, 2nd Animal Antiks and 3rd Blazin’ Impact Signs.
  • The top three karts in the Junior category were: 1st Inferno Racing Team, 2nd Tractor Boys and 3rd Age Youth.
  • The awards for Best Looking Kart were voted for by spectators: 1st Shark Attack 2nd Animal Antiks and 3rd Inferno Racing Team
  • The Team Spirit award, sponsored by Michael Anthony Estate Agents, was given to Inferno Racing Team.

DJ Dan Blaze compered the event and provided belly-laughs thanks to his Father’s Day ‘dad jokes’ and dancing games. There was plenty for spectators to see and do including drumming with HW Drums, facepainting by Zoomania, games and activities from the Mayor’s charity of the year, Pace, giant bubbles in the Bubble Zone, Lego Soapbox races, crafts with Queens Park Arts Centre, anthology with Unbound Theatre and fantastic food from local vendors.

A Quiet Zone, with Hand Talking, offered a calm space for the neurodiverse community to take a break from the event if needed. This area is present at all Town Council events, reflecting their commitment to hosting Fair4All events.
