Cllr Alan Sherwell

Aylesbury’s Mayor for the year 2024-25, Cllr Alan Sherwell, was elected at the annual meeting of the Council on 9 May 2024, which was held at the Town Hall.

Cllr Alan Sherwell, thanked everyone for the nomination and election and said:

“Becoming Mayor is a great honour but also a great responsibility. The Mayoralty has existed for more than 100 years; I am just its custodian for 12 months. It is a symbol of Aylesbury, signaling we are a single community, although with many different strands deserving to be celebrated.

“The role is also to bring people together – Aylesbury as a whole and organisations (charitable and not) who work in similar areas. Two priorities for me are education (youth and adult) and young people generally. So, I have chosen Pace as my chosen charity of the year. Pace provides outstanding services to children with neurodisability but could do even more with greater resources.”

Cllr Nidhi Mehta accepted the role of Deputy Mayor for the coming year.

As The First Citizen of the town, each year the Town Mayor accepts many invitations to attend public and community events across the Parish. These invitations come from a wide variety of groups, organisations, businesses and charities to attend meetings, openings, galas and fundraisers, giving the Mayor of Aylesbury the unique opportunity to meet and talk to many local residents. This is part of the Mayor’s public role and something that they take great pride in fulfilling.

At the start of the Mayoral term, the Mayor has the privilege to choose a charity to support, both in terms of raising much needed funds as well as raising the charities profile within the community. The charity will have a direct link and benefit to the residents of the Parish and are often based within the Parish boundaries. As the charities ambassador, The Mayor has the opportunity to make a big impact during their year of office, this is a role and honour that each Mayor takes very seriously.

For 2024-25, Cllr Alan Sherwell is delighted to be supporting Pace Charity.

Pace provides education and therapy support for children aged 0-18 with a wide range of neurodisabilities. They support over 500 children and young people and their families across Aylesbury and the home counties. Pace School are specialists in supporting children and young people with cerebral palsy and other similar sensory motor disorders. The Therapy Services cater for children with a much wider variety of needs, including autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), social emotional and mental health challenges (SEMH), behavioural challenges, school refusal and motor coordination challenges. Find out more about the charity.
